Cell Phone Test

Use this form to see if you can receive a test SMS and MMS text message. The actual test we send out is: "WxNotice SMS Text Message". If you get that message on your cell phone then you can successfully receive textual weather reports from wxnotice.com on your cell phone. Your cell phone must have at least SMS (Short Message Service) text messaging capability (120 to 160 characters, depending on your cellular provider). If you don't have text messaging capability, you may be able to call your cellular provider and have that feature added or enabled.

MMS is primarily designed to receive pictures/images but you may also use it to receive text messages (up to approximately 1000 characters!). The actual test we send out is: "WxNotice MMS Text Message". If you get that message on your cell phone then you can successfully receive textual weather reports from wxnotice.com on your cell phone. If you have a picture cell phone then your phone has MMS capability. You need to make sure you have this capability enabled by your cellular provider in order to make use of it.

Note 1: Your cell phone MUST have picture capability to receive wx images! In other words, your cell phone must have a built-in camera. No camera, no picture capability and that means you won't be able to use our service to receive wx images. However, you can still receive our textual weather reports.

Note 2: At the present time, Nextel cellular subscribers cannot receive MMS images sent to their cell phones/PDA devices from anyone who is not already on their network. This means we cannot send you any weather images, only textual weather reports. This is a Nextel network limitation and has nothing to do with wxnotice.com.

Your cell phone may require a .GIF image format or a .JPG image format. If you don't know for sure, send both types and see which one you receive. Once you know, set the image format type in your main account record. Once you are logged in, click on the Edit Account nav bar link.

Note: You are responsible to your cellular provider for any fees associated with using SMS and MMS text/picture messaging.

If you do not get your textual weather report or weather image, please contact us so we can determine why: support@wxnotice.com

Enter your cell phone number first in this format: 123 456 7890. If you don't get a successful test, you may have to omit the spaces (depends who your cellular provider is). We have been told by some of our customers that AT&T/Cingular require that spaces be omitted in your phone number.

Notes:

(1) The larger capacity MMS text messaging protocol is needed to receive Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR's) and Airmet & Sigmet reports since these reports well exceed the character limits of SMS.

(2) Cell phone test for the Satellite image sends out the image and the URL link to the image in the body of the message. This is for AT&T/Cingular subscribers who cannot receive MMS pictures from 3rd parties off of their network. You may have a picture phone which is capable of clicking on or otherwise activating the URL link which will then fetch the image.

(3) Some cellular subscriber web sites (such as SunCom.com) have a web page where you can send other subscribers an SMS text message and/or MMS picture message. If you are having trouble receiving our test weather reports, you may want to go to your cellular subscriber web site and send yourself a test message. When it arrives, look at the From address to see what the gateway address is that they are using. Often, it is difficult to find the correct MMS gateway address to use.

(4) MMS Gateway Addresses - The MMS cellular protocol is used to send picture messages to your cell phone. Sometimes the MMS gateway address is different from the SMS gateway address but sometimes they are the same.

Below is a partial listing of some gateway addresses in our database to give you an idea of what an MMS gateway address looks like.
The format we use to send you an SMS text message or MMS picture message is: cell_phone_number@gateway_address.

  • AT&T/Cingular
  •   SMS gateway: @txt.att.net
  •   MMS gateway: @mms.att.net
